What is body image?

Body Image Therapy in Miami and Coral Gables

Body image is the way you see, think about, and feel about your body. It includes more than appearance. It can also involve how comfortable you feel in your body, how you imagine others see you, and the beliefs you have developed about what your body should look like.

Family messages, culture, relationships, and life experiences can all influence body image.

What is a healthy body image?

Having a healthy body image does not mean loving every part of your appearance every day. It means seeing your body with greater balance and treating it with respect, even on difficult days. Your appearance does not determine your worth.

A healthier body image allows you to participate in life without thoughts about your shape, size, or appearance constantly controlling what you wear, what you eat, where you go, or how you connect with other people.

A small body-image exercise

Try a brief body-neutral check-in.

Think of three ways your body supported you today that have nothing to do with appearance. For example:

  • My hands helped me prepare a meal.
  • My senses helped me enjoy music.
  • My body let me know when I needed rest.

Then notice one critical thought about your appearance and replace it with a neutral statement. Instead of saying, “I look terrible today,” try:

“I am having a difficult body-image day, and I can still treat myself with care.”

The goal is not to force yourself to feel positive. It is to practice seeing your body as more than something that needs to be judged or changed.

When body-image concerns take up too much space

There can be room for something different.

If concerns about your body are affecting how you eat, dress, socialize, or move through your day, therapy can provide a place to understand those patterns with honesty and compassion.
